In the early fourth-century, St. Helena, the mother of Roman Emperor Constantine, had traveled to Jerusalem in search of the holy places of Christ’s life. St. Helena ordered that the pagan Temple of Aphrodite be torn down, which tradition held was built over the Savior’s tomb. During the excavation, workers found three crosses. Legend has it that the one on which Jesus died was identified when its touch healed a dying woman. The basilica was built on the site by her son, Emperor Constantine.
