Get Involved

We have many opportunities for you to participate in our church activities. If you are interested in any of the activities listed below, please contact Fr. Bill or watch the church bulletin and newsletter for more information.

Acolytes
Acolytes are adults and youth who assist the priest in worship. Acolytes light candles prior to the service, and extinguish them at the end of the service. They also carry the processional cross at beginning of the service and at the end of the service. For more information or to volunteer, contact Fr. Bill.

Altar Guild
Altar Guild members set up the altar for every communion. They also care for the linens and priest’s vestments. Twice a year, the Altar Guild has a church cleaning day.

Church Grounds Maintenance
Volunteers are asked to help with weekly grass cutting on a rotating basis. We provide the mower. We also invite anyone who loves to garden or work outside to stop by and spend an hour weeding, watering, or trimming to help keep our church grounds tidy and looking nice. We have church work days in the spring and fall, and volunteers are always very much appreciated.

Coffee Hour Host

Coffee Hour hosts bring light refreshments, such as donuts, muffins, coffee cake, juice, and/or milk to serve after the 10 a.m. service. The coffee is provided, and the hosts clean up afterward. The sign-up sheet to be a Coffee Hour host is downstairs on the bulletin board next to the coffee bar.

Lay  Reader
Lay readers read passages from the Old and New Testaments at all services, and they also recite the Prayers for the People. Lay readers also assist during communion with the chalice. For more information or to volunteer, please contact Fr. Bill.

Martha Circle
The Martha Circle is our church’s women’s group. All women are invited to participate in Martha Circle activities. The group sponsors and partially funds special events for church women, including lunches out, museum tours, trips to see theatrical performances, and arts and crafts activities. They hold a rummage sale in the spring to help pay for a variety of church and local charitable needs. The Martha Circle organizes, provides, and serves food after funeral services, and is the sponsor of our Prayer Blanket outreach.

Prayer Partners
Prayer Partners sign up in January to be matched with a person they will secretly pray for throughout the year. Prayer Partners also give cards and gifts to their partners on birthdays, anniversaries, and holidays. Partners are matched the first week of February by a random drawing and reveal themselves on Epiphany Sunday the following year.

Sunday School Volunteer
St. Augustine’s has Sunday School for children age 3 and up. Sunday School volunteers help the children with the morning’s activities. Volunteers are also invited to teach a lesson. Materials can be provided or volunteers can choose what they would like to teach. There are also opportunities during the months of June, July, and August, when volunteers can teach one summer Sunday morning. Materials can be provided.

Vacation Bible School Volunteer
Our church, along with Danville Christian Church and Danville Methodist Church, host Vacation Bible School each June. Volunteers are needed to help with activities, serve food, and lead children to the VBS stations. Our parishioners also donate food and craft items for the event.

Vestry
The vestry is our association of parishioners who help make decisions regarding church business. Vestry members are nominated by our parishioners and elected to serve three-year terms.
